Lawren Stewart Lewis (1885-1970) was a Canadian landscape painter who was a member of The Group of Seven. Harris was born and spent his youth in Ontario, Canada. He came from a wealthy family which allowed him to fully dedicate his life to being a painter. He was a member of The Group of Seven along with the painters James Edward Hervey Mcdonald, Arthur Lismer, and Franklin Carmichael. Harris’ painted landscapes and took several trips during his life to the Canadian Rockies and even the Arctic. He was known to paint in bright, vibrant colors, but during the 1920s his works became more simple, neutral, and abstract. It was not until the 1930s that he fully turned to abstraction. Lawren Stewart Lewis died in 1970 at the age of 84.
