Lavinia Fontana was an Italian portraitist popular among noblewomen in Bologna and later in Rome where she worked in the court of Pope Paul V. Her family relied on her work as an artist while her husband helped to raise their eleven children and worked as her agent. Given her unprecedented success for the period, she remains the female artist with the largest oeuvre before 1700.
