Belgian-American painter Henry Cleenewerck was born on September 17th, 1818, in Watou, Belgium. Cleenewerck traveled extensively throughout his career, spending time in Cuba, France, and the United States, where he eventually became a naturalized citizen. The exotic jungles of Cuba inspired many of Cleenewerck’s paintings, such as Guajiros En El Camino (Cuba), which allowed him to become a highly regarded and celebrated artist in Cuba.
