Grace Hartigan was an Abstract Expressionist painter and active contributor to the New York School during the 50s and 60s, although she did not like her work being defined by any category or genre. She once described her work, which is gestural and abstracted, as “emotional pain remembered in tranquility”. She saw recognition very early in her career, especially when in 1950 she was included in Clement Greenburg and Meyer Schapiro’s “New Talents” exhibition.
