One of the most renowned artists of the 19th century, Fidelia, unique to her time, supported herself creating highly detailed, realistic oil paintings and watercolors of nature, birds, and flowers. After studying art in Italy she sold works, published them in books, magazines, and as Christmas cards, but rarely exhibited in public showings. Author and humorist, Mark Twain was one of her patrons and she was a nanny to his three children for a time. She is known for her great joy and insight into natural beauty.
