Elizabeth Thompson was a painter who specialized in British military scenes. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, she moved to London in 1866. Thompson gained popularity for her paintings of soldiers that emphasized their bravery, but also for including details such as dirt and heat that showed
the realistic aspects of war. Many of her paintings depicted famous battles, such as the Battle of Waterloo and scenes from the Crimean War.
