Corita Kent

November 20, 1918 - September 18, 1986

Also known as Sister Mary Corita Kent, Corita Kent was a Roman Catholic religious sister and teacher. After teaching herself screen printing, she used the medium as a way to spread her political activism and messages of love and peace during the social tumult of the 60s and 70s. Her combined use of advertising slogans and imagery, popular song lyrics, and bible verses addressed modern issues of racism, poverty, and injustice. She has recently been considered a participant in the Pop movement and an innovator in the medium of silk screen printing.
