Catherine Opie is a contemporary American photographer who explores the ways in which photography can document and highlight how people experience, interact with, and respond to various social phenomena in the United States today. Through portraiture and landscape as well as a combined approach of conceptual and documentary methods, Opie explores both individual identities and group identities. Specific examples of these themes include political movements, queer subcultures, and urban transformation. She teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has received numerous awards and fellowships.
