Angela Kauffman was a Swiss painter, best known for portraiture and history painting. Born to an artistic father and noble mother, Kauffman enjoyed access to private lessons and elite society. She achieved immense popularity, having been commissioned by royal courts and becoming a member of royal academies. As an artist, Kauffman championed equality in the way men and women were to be depicted.
