Agnes Martin was a Canadian-born American artist who is known for her sparingly detailed paintings that include graphs and stripes in muted tones. Her artistic practice and unique style are informed by her belief that art can conjure in the viewer profound and positive experiences. In her early career, she lived in Taos, New Mexico, but after being discovered by renowned gallerist Betty Parsons she was recruited to New York. Her work has continuously received high praise and in 1998 she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
