This photograph depicts a baseball team from a historically black college in Atlanta, Georgia. While positioned in relaxed manners, the men stare into the camera with fairly serious expressions. In 1899, the year in which this photo was taken, black Americans were treated as second-class citizens, and certainly not made to feel welcome in the United States. This provides an interesting juxtaposition with the presence of baseball, commonly known as "America's pastime".
