John Ward Dunsmore is known for his patriotic renderings of American history around the turn of the century. In this wintry scene, he portrays George Washington and Marquis de Lafayette visiting the troops at Valley Forge during the War for American Independence. To highlight the unfavorably cold conditions in which the troops were serving, Dunsmore depicts a group of soldiers huddled around a fire for warmth. Despite the harsh cold, Washington and Lafayette appear strong and confident in these winter quarters for the American troops.
