This panel from Lawrence’s Migration Series, a powerful collection of images that depicts the causes and effects of the mass migration of black Americans from the South to the North in the 20th century, focuses on a cause for the exodus to the North. Instead of centering those who were lynched, this image highlights those it affects, by depicting a red figure shrouded in grief, huddled beneath a hanging noose. Lawrence offers a relatively simple tableau, allowing for a powerful representation of all those lost to violent, racially-charged deaths.
