Placed against a deep blue background are two figures posed at a table with their heads bowed down in gesture of a prayer of grace. In front of them on the table are two bowls with spoons, standing as the only items on the table. Behind them, there is only one item on the wall: an empty pot hanging on a nail and board rack. This panel stands as a pause in Lawrence’s Migration Series, offering a counter to the fast paced anxiety or excitement of travelers during their journey. Rather, this panel displays the migration as a pursuit of basic human dignity and needs; in this scene, focusing on the extreme poverty faced by African American workers.
