Matisse’s daughter Marguerite was a frequent model in his works. This lithograph captures Marguerite in a few simple yet purposeful lines. Her upturned smile and glimmering eyes are even more powerful considering that this work was completed in 1945 after Marguerite, who was actively involved in the French resistance, escaped the Gestapo and moved in with Matisse and Lydia in Vence, France.
