Mary Winsor was a leading force in the woman's suffrage movement in the United States. She brought many of the techniques used in the woman's suffrage movement in England to the U.S., including marching and picketing. The banner that Winsor is seen holding in this photograph states that suffrage prisoners not be treated as such, a cause to which she was particularly dedicated since she herself had been arrested several times in relation to her picketing, marching and general efforts toward woman's suffrage.
