Through its collections, the MNAC offers a journey through 1,000 years of Catalan art, as well as from the rest of Spain and Europe. Most outstanding are Romanesque art, and Modernisme, two of the most important and admired periods in Catalan art. The visit also includes Gothic art, the Renaissance and the Baroque, the Cambó Bequest, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection and the collections of Modern Art, Drawings, Prints and Posters, Coins and Medals and Photography.
The Romanesque art collection is of great interest for those who are looking for the roots of Catalan identity. Its ensemble of mural paintings is the only one of its kind in the world.
The Gothic Art Collection reflects one of the most brilliant periods in Catalonia, the period stretching from the end of the 13th to the 15th century. The pieces from Catalonia form the richest group.
The Renaissance and Baroque Art Collections reflect the art produced in Spain and Europe in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and offers an overview of its evolution. The collection includes big names in the art world such as Titian, Tintoretto, Cranach, El Greco, José de Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán, Diego Velázquez and Rubens.
The Modern art collection is one of the most varied in the MNAC; a journey through a century and a half ranging from the 19th century until the 1940s. This was a period in which different artistic conventions took strong and singular root in Catalonia: from Neoclassicism to the avant-garde movements to Modernisme (Catalan Art Nouveau) and Noucentisme. Some examples of the outstanding artists represented here include Fortuny, Casas, Rusiñol, Gaudí, Jujol, Picasso, Gargallo and Julio González and, in the field of photography, Pla Janini, Masana, Godes, Maspons and Colom.
The Cabinet of Drawings and Prints holds the most significant collection of work on paper in all of Catalonia, with pieces that represent the artistic activity of the period from the 16th century until the beginning of the avant-garde movements.
The Numismatic Cabinet of Catalonia houses a collection of more than 134,000 pieces and is the primary public collection of coins, medals and valuable paper in the country.
