The Gallery is located in the centre of Sydney and bordered by the harbour, parklands and gardens. Established in 1874 in a small neo-classical sandstone building, the Gallery has expanded with contemporary architectural additions and is considered in one of the most beautiful art museums in the world.
Modern and contemporary works are displayed in expansive, light-filled spaces, offering stunning views of Sydney and the harbour, while the splendid Grand Courts are home to a distinguished collection of colonial Australian works and European old masters. There are also dedicated galleries celebrating the arts of Asia and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and a new floor for contemporary art. Alongside the permanent collection are regularly changing temporary exhibitions – more than thirty a year from Australia and overseas.
