Seattle, WA– April 13, 2013 – 1000Museums announced today that the company had reached the century mark with respect to its rapidly growing network of world-class museums. Brendan Burns, the CEO of 1000Museums, said, “The 1KM team has done an incredible job over the past four years establishing the first online network of world-class museums. The growth and vitality of this group is truly impressive. Like any network we all become stronger with every new member.”

Over the past several months, new museums joining 1KM include: Ackland Art Museum, Art Gallery of NSW, CT Historical Society, Currier Art Museum, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Harn Museum of Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Kimbell Art Museum, Melbourne Museum, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, National Gallery of Victoria – Melbourne, Pera Museum – Istanbul, Queensland Art Gallery, Rijksmuseum, San Diego History Center, National Museum of Contemporary Art – Athens Greece, Telfair Museums, USC Libraries, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Additionally the company formally announced the creation of the 1KM Network. Kirsten Soderlind, founder and Chief Creative Officer of 1000Museums said, “It has long been my dream to help museums share with art lovers around the world the wonderful art and knowledge that has long been confined to a single institution. For the past four years we have been building relationships and technology that supports that vision. As our network gets bigger our museums will share content in the form of images and information with each other and the public in a way that builds audience engagement and opens new revenue streams for museums.”

******

About 1000Museums

Christopher Lightfoot, Curator in the Department of Greek and Roman Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, offers insights on the Lod Mosaic, an ancient Roman mosaic from Lod, Israel.

A specialist on the subject of ancient glass and numismatics, Dr. Lightfoot oversaw the day-to-day management of the reinstallation of the New Greek and Roman Galleries that opened in April 2007.

Dr. Lightfoot was educated at the University of Oxford, he earned his doctoral degree in Ancient History with a dissertation about the eastern frontier of the Roman Empire. He was also the curator for the Lod Mosaic special exhibition at the Met in 2010–2011 and has written about the mosaic in the January/February 2011 issue of Minerva. This free program is made possible by Dr. Charles Cunningham who was a longtime friend and generous supporter of the Museum.

A type of pottery painting from ancient Greece that shows red figures against a black background.

The Brygos Painter is one of the best known red-figure vase painters of his era. This scene of a symposium, or a Greek drinking party, shows a male guest who is reclining on a couch keeping time for a girl who dances. Her cropped hair indicates that she is a slave.

The museum which bears her name also stands as a testament to her vision. Isabella Stewart Gardner, known also as “Mrs. Jack” in reference to her husband, John L. (“Jack”) Gardner, was one of the foremost female patrons of the arts. She was a patron and friend of leading artists and writers of her time, including John Singer Sargent, James McNeill Whistler, and Henry James. She was a supporter of community social services and cultural enrichment. She was an ardent fan of the Boston Symphony, the Red Sox, and Harvard College football. Isabella Stewart Gardner was also the visionary creator of what remains one of the most remarkable and intimate collections of art in the world today and a dynamic supporter of artists of her time, encouraging music, literature, dance, and creative thinking across artistic disciplines.

Over three decades, Isabella Stewart Gardner traveled the world and worked with important art patrons and advisors Bernard Berenson and Okakura Kakuzo to amass a remarkable collection of master and decorative arts. In 1903, she completed the construction of Fenway Court in Boston to house her collection and provide a vital place for Americans to access and enjoy important works of art. Isabella Gardner installed her collection of works in a way to evoke intimate responses to the art, mixing paintings, furniture, textiles, and objects from different cultures and periods among well-known European paintings and sculpture.

The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, opened to the public in July 1997, eleven years after the death of the artist from whom it takes its name. Welcoming more than 2,225,000 visitors from all over the world and being the most visited art museum in the state of New Mexico, it is the only museum in the world dedicated to an internationally known American woman artist.

The Museum’s collection of over 3,000 works comprises 1,149 O’Keeffe paintings, drawings, and sculptures that date from 1901 to 1984, the year failing eyesight forced O’Keeffe into retirement. The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is the largest single repository of O’Keeffe’s work in the world. Throughout the year, visitors can see a changing selection of these works. In addition, the Museum presents special exhibitions that are either devoted entirely to O’Keeffe’s work or combine examples of her art with works by her American modernist contemporaries. The Museum also organizes exhibitions of works by her contemporaries, as well as by living artists of distinction. Over 140 artists other than O’Keeffe have been exhibited at the Museum, such as Arthur Dove, Sherrie Levine, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol.
